Worlds Lightest Solid!

Aerogels are the worlds lightest (least dense) solids. They are also excellent thermal insulators and have been used in numerous Mars missions and the Stardust comet particle-return mission. The focus of this video is silica aerogels, though graphene aerogels are now technically the lightest.

At one point Dr. Steven Jones literally held the Guinness World Record for making the lightest aerogel and therefore lightest solid. If youre interested in learning more about aerogels, let me know in the comments as there is a potential trilogy in the works…

Huge thanks to Dr. Stephen Steiner and the crew at Aerogel Technologies. To find out more or buy your own aerogel sample, check out: www.aerogeltechnologies.com/

Thanks to Dr. Steven Jones and Dr. Mihail Petkov at NASAs Jet Propulsion Laboratory

And thanks to FLIR for loaning us the awesome high definition thermal camera. The footage is amazing! www.flir.com

«Луноход» — назад в будущее

В конце февраля 1971 года была завершена основная трехмесячная программа работы «Лунохода». Анализ бортовых систем показал возможность продолжения активной работы аппарата. Поэтому для «Лунохода» составили дополнительную полугодовую программу. «Луноход-1» проехал по Луне 11 километров, передал на Землю 20 тысяч снимков лунного рельефа. Надежность «Лунохода-1» позволила работать на Луне почти год и в три раза превысить программу исследований.

Field Trials Utah: Robot team simulates Mars mission in Utah

Another cool video of DFKI space robots in the desert of morocco: youtu.be/-zqve9baOzM

A barren, rocky desert landscape and not a single soul around – to come as close as possible to the inhospitable conditions on the Red Planet, scientists of the Robotics Innovation Center of the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) tested the cooperation of various robot systems in the desert of the American state of Utah from 24 October to 18 November 2016.

The project Field Trials Utah (FT-Utah) is funded by the German Space Agency (DLR Agentur) with federal funds of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology in accordance with the parliamentary resolution of the German Parliament, grant no. 50 RA 1621 (DFKI) and 50RA1622 (University of Bremen).

★ The Biggest MONSTER Stars - Compared to our Sun

Looking up at the sky inspires deep moments of introspection and curiosity. It’s easy to feel small under a starry night sky.

★ TOP 10 — Best of Hubble Space Telescope — 2015 ► www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lmx19_...

THE SUN is the star at the center of the Solar System and is by far the most important source of energy for life on Earth. It is a nearly perfect spherical ball of hot plasma with internal convective motion that generates a magnetic field via a dynamo process. Its diameter is about 109 times that of Earth, and it has a mass about 330,000 times that of Earth, accounting for about 99.86% of the total mass of the Solar System. Chemically, about three quarters of the Suns mass consists of hydrogen, whereas the rest is mostly helium, and much smaller quantities of heavier elements, including oxygen, carbon, neon and iron

THE PISTOL STAR is a blue hypergiant and is one of the most luminous known stars in the Milky Way Galaxy. It is one of many massive young stars in the Quintuplet cluster in the Galactic Center region. The star owes its name to the shape of the Pistol Nebula, which it illuminates. It is located approximately 25,000 light years from Earth in the direction of Sagittarius. It would be visible to the naked eye as a fourth magnitude star if it were not for the interstellar dust that completely hides it from view in visible light.

VY CANIS MAJORIS (VY CMa) is a red hypergiant star located in the constellation Canis Major. It is one of the largest stars (at one time the largest known) and also one of the most luminous of its type, and has a radius of approximately 1,420 ± 120 solar radii (equal to a diameter of 13.2 astronomical units, or about 1,976,640,000 km), and is located about 1.2 kiloparsecs (3,900 light-years) from Earth.

UY SCUTI is a bright red supergiant and pulsating variable star in the constellation Scutum. It is one of the leading candidates for being the largest known star by radius and is also one of the most luminous of its kind. It has an estimated average median radius of 1,708 solar radii, or a diameter of 2.4 billion km (1.5 billion mi; 15.9 AU); thus a volume 5 billion times that of the Sun. It is approximately 2.9 kiloparsecs (9,500 light years) from Earth.

Shuttle Atlantis STS-132 - Amazing Shuttle Launch Experience

Kennedy Space Center, May 14th 2010.
I was privileged to travel to the Kennedy Space Center, to watch the launch of Atlantis, on what was then, the final «scheduled» flight of the orbiter (STS-132). This video is my homage to the shuttle program, through the in depth experience of a single orbiter launch. I believe we should be thankful for the Atlantis orbiter, all her astronauts, the countless NASA staff who made her fly, and the American people who created a space vehicle of extraordinary power and grace.

This footage incorporates numerous camera views from the ground, footage I took during launch, and video and audio from NASA showing the orbiter stack itself, during takeoff and flight — in order to experiencing the all the preparation and the resulting eight and a half minute exhilarating ride into space.

In places, the timeline of the actual events has been extended slightly to allow us to see different viewpoints of the same moment, and better experience the amazing feat of launching a spacecraft into orbit.

Enjoy the ride!

MORE BACKGROUND
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After this flight, Atlantis was processed and prepared to fly one last time… this time as «on call» STS-335, which would remain flight ready, should either of the remaining two orbiters flights require a rescue mission.
A rescue flight was not needed and Congress, in a rare moment of clarity, appropriated enough money to extend the program to allowed the already «flight ready» Atlantis to launch one last time and to become the last shuttle mission of the Shuttle Program, as STS-135.
Atlantis now has a home at the Kennedy Space Center.
