On the wild coast of Patagonia, the nature calendar describes the most diverse visiting times of fascinating animals, from the southern right whale and other large whales, via the sea lions and elephant seals up to the orcas and millions of penguins. The encounters with whales and their babies are spectacular.

Hardly anywhere else on earth can one experience both the brutal and the delightful sides of nature so vividly and so close. The trip to the hot spots for animal watchers and researchers leads us inter alia to the Caleta Valdez. This is where, during the mating season, the southern elephant seals bring their babies into the world, mate and enjoy a little sunbathing on the beach.

CORRECTIONS
This was a long video and in hindsight there are a few things I wish I had phrased better. Here they all are:
— I misspoke around 01:13 when I said «negative one, zero» as it is clearly «negative one, one, zero».
— At 07:53 I mean the negative values -5 to 0. I said it a weird way.
— My language at about the 1D input to 2D plot from 09:17 is a bit sloppy. The real values going into the Binet function are not the horizontal axis shown; the plot onscreen is solely the output.
— I say «axis» when I mean «plane» or even «complex plane». The big flat thing.

Мы никогда не узнаем, кем на самом деле был легендарный варяг Рюрик и был ли он реальным историческим лицом. Зато мы знаем, кем были его потомки. Среди них были поэты и воины, святые и разбойники, законодатели и братоубийцы. Одни восходили на престол по праву рождения, другие — по приглашению, третьи — по трупам родных братьев, но законной их власть над огромной страной делала сама принадлежность к правящему дому Рюриковичей.

В истории династии было все: завоевания и потери, любовь и предательство, интриги и новые законы, яростная борьба за власть и высокое самопожертвование, пепел пожарищ и создание мировых шедевров. Рюриковичи укрепляли, обороняли, расширяли свое государство: кто-то — огнем и мечом, кто-то — миром и договором. Во время их правления сформировалась русская нация и возник феномен русской культуры. Именно Рюриковичи создали ту самую страну — трансконтинентальную полиэтничную державу, — в которой мы сегодня живем.

Василий I Дмитриевич

На протяжении своего правления Василий находился между двух огней: Ордой и Литвой, и своей умелой политикой отстаивал в этих условиях независимость Москвы. Внешнеполитическая ситуация не раз менялась, успехи князя сменялись неудачами, но последние годы его правления были относительно спокойными, и Москва получила возможность укреплять свой экономический потенциал. Время Василия I отмечено высочайшим взлетом древнерусской культуры: именно в его эпоху сложился канон церковной архитектуры и живописи, работали иконописцы Феофан Грек и Андрей Рублев.

Василий II Васильевич (Темный)

Большую часть его правления заняла четвертьвековая междоусобная война между двумя семьями рода Калиты. Василий несколько раз лишался трона, попадал в плен, был ослеплен, за что и получил прозвание Темный. Однако сумел в конце концов выйти из всех междоусобий победителем, укрепить Московское государство и почти ликвидировать ордынскую зависимость. При нем Русская церковь получила фактическую автокефалию — самостоятельность относительно Константинопольского патриархата.
