The fascinating world of the humpback whales

In the warm Pacific just off the coast of Maui, a hump whale mother has paired and given birth to her baby. Now, the time has come, whereby she has to take her baby on a 5.500-kilometre-long journey to the grazing grounds off Alaska. The animal has already lost 30% of its weight, but she still has to constantly feed her calf.

Their destination is in Alaskas south, where the whale mother will hunt herrings with the other humpback whales. Together, they create so-called air nets and surround the herrings: This is known as bubble net feeding. Orcas go fishing here for herrings, too, but also hunt down whale calves.

Again and again, prior to each bubble net, one can hear the humpback whales singing. This is drowned out only by the sounds of thousands of seagulls that nest in the cliffs close by. Employing various tricks and much to the consternation of the humpback whales, puffins and northern sea lions attempt to benefit from the prey in the bubble net.
In the south of the bay, belugas have arrived at the salmon rivers, in order to hunt salmon. We manage to dive and capture them on camera.
In contrast to the humpbacks, they are extremely tame and enjoy con-tact with humans. A unique cat-and-mouse game begins.

Sperm Whales Dealing : With The Unexpected - Wildlife Documentary

Around the Crozet Islands, here is the incredible odyssey of a family of Sperm Whales facing rapid changes in their environment. From the stormy surface to the eternal darkness of the abyss, several generations of these deep-sea divers encounter men and their «toys»: harpoons of yesterday, and fishing lines of today. Once victim of whale hunting, now accused of stealing fish, a sperm whale shares its private life with us. And what an immersion! We discover in turn its mysterious sonar, its competitors like orcas, and also the strange world of its neighbors — the deep-sea monsters. Amongst them, a revelation: the biggest squid ever filmed in its natural environment, almost 15 feet long. Come and discover the depths of the Crozet abyss…

Dramatic raw footage of NOAA researchers tagging orcas with cross bows (killer whales) in Antarctica

I took these incredible shots while accompanying whale researchers who are doing excellent work in helping whales by tagging, cataloging, and studying the killer whales in Antarctica. (Viewing in HD recommended) Arrows are used to attach GPS based location tags to the dorsal fins and as you can see the whales do not react to it. I imagine its similar to a human getting their ears pieced. Tags stay in place for about a month before falling off and help track the whales migration patterns. Biopsy arrows on the other hand collect a tiny sample of blubber on the hollow tip of the arrow to help scientists determine their nutrition, health and diet. Every arrow used is accounted for under strict permits and regulations.

This research has shown the population of the Ross Sea whales are declining. They normally feed off the Antarctic Toothfish which is a large fish which has been over-harvested by commercial fishing. However, during this filming, these whales were seen feeding off a very small fish, the bourke fish as the toothfish were no longer present. For the whales to be expending all the energy just to hunt for bourke fish is like us hunting for a single grain of rice. Please see the film The Last Ocean www.lastocean.org and help by not consuming their prey, marketed as the Chilean sea bass (toothfish) in restaurants.

Lastly, it seems a lot of Youtube whale experts think the whales are stuck in the ice. They are not. They are in one of many holes in the lead and we are very close to the open sea.

A man among Orcas - documentary full hd

In the remote volcanic archipelago of the Crozet islands, meet David Reicnert, a cameraman who has an extraordinary talent to locate, approach and tame some of the wildest beasts on Earth.

Enduring raging winds and icy waters with minimal protection, he enters the intimacy of elephant seals and orcas using clever ethological analyses and gets them used to his presence. Then comes the extraordinary: meet a man who communicates with penguins with body language, calms young seals and turns them into live pillows, lies underwater with 8 ton orcas or mature male seals…

Context:
David Reichert is a young American wildlife filmmaker who has dedicated his life to his passion. Specialized in marine subjects, at ease in rough seas and icy waters, David has an incredible resistance to extreme environments and a real talent for dealing with complex wildlife situations. To achieve this unique film, he spent 4 months in an isolated bay on an island 2000 miles away from the nearest continent with Jean François BARTHOD, another talented filmmaker and director with a solid experience as a DOP of feature films.

Killing to Survive - Hunting Orcas on the Patagonian coast

On the wild coast of Patagonia, the nature calendar describes the most diverse visiting times of fascinating animals, from the southern right whale and other large whales, via the sea lions and elephant seals up to the orcas and millions of penguins. The encounters with whales and their babies are spectacular.

Hardly anywhere else on earth can one experience both the brutal and the delightful sides of nature so vividly and so close. The trip to the hot spots for animal watchers and researchers leads us inter alia to the Caleta Valdez. This is where, during the mating season, the southern elephant seals bring their babies into the world, mate and enjoy a little sunbathing on the beach.

Drakensberg - Africas Dragon Mountains - The Secrets of Nature

A dragon hatched from the volcanic furnaces of Gondwanaland. Ancient almost beyond comprehension, yet a living thing. And vast, stretching across a subcontinent, its spine arching above the clouds…

No lucky dragon, this. Starvation festers beneath the shimmering green of its skin. But to the creatures that live along its flanks, it can be a bountiful provider as well as a remorseless destroyer. Today we call it the Drakensberg, or «Dragon Mountain». «Drakensberg» is a dynamic documentary journey through the life of this ever-astonishing mountain. It is also a story of animal survival in a landscape of overwhelming, pitiless power.
